Why it is important to groom your dog

Grooming your dog isn’t just for making him look good; it is an important part of keeping him healthy. As you brush, wash and trim his coat, you’ll become very familiar with his body and you can identify any problems before they become too serious.

Brushing

The first step in in grooming your dog is to brush or comb his coat thoroughly. This will remove any loose hair and dirt, and you’ll be able to tease out any knots or clumps of matted fur. Choose a brush that is appropriate for his coat type. The Grip Soft Dog Pin Brush is ideal for tidying up long coats but if his coat is short, choose the gentle Kong Zoom Groom. You might find that as you groom him, you’ll collect enough loose hair to knit another dog!

While you are brushing

While you’re brushing him, separate his fur and have a close look at his skin. Check for any skin sores, bald patches or excessive dandruff. Look for fleas, and make sure there aren’t any signs of scratching such as broken skin or moist inflammation.

Bathing and washing

Step two is bath time. Dogs without any skin sensitivities can be washed with a mild, soap free shampoo such as Dermcare Natural Shampoo. If your four legged friend is itchy, Aloveen Oatmeal Shampoo and conditioner will soothe his irritation and make him feel more comfortable. As you lather him up, move your hands all over his legs and body. Concentrate on feeling for lumps and bumps that shouldn’t be there. They may well be harmless, but it’s worth having them checked out before they grow too large.

Some dogs have long hair around their eyes which can cause irritation and conjunctivitis. Prevent sore eyes by using fine scissors and trimming those tufts of hair around their eyes. It can be quite nerve wracking wielding scissors around your dog’s eyes, especially if he moves his head!

Nails

If your dog has long toenails, make sure your grooming regime includes a nail trim. Toenails can grow long enough to get broken as he plays. This hurts, and there can be quite a lot of bleeding. Regular trimming with a sharp pair of Resco nail clippers will prevent this from happening. Clipping nails can be quite daunting, especially if your dog has black toenails and you can’t see the pink vein that runs up the middle of the nail, but with a bit of practice you’ll have no problems giving your dog a manicure.

There is one other reason grooming is good for your dog’s health, and it has nothing to do with his coat, his skin or his nails. How nice is it to have a full body massage, and the undivided attention of someone you look up to! If you spend time brushing, washing and massaging your dog, you’re improving your relationship with him. Not only that, but because he is clean and smells fresh, you’re much more likely to cuddle up with him on the couch.

Dog grooming

Grooming your dog will help to keep his coat healthy, it will allow you to have any skin problems treated early so he doesn’t itch and scratch, and it will make him feel good. Why not schedule a grooming session in your calendar at least once a month, and you’ll both enjoy the results.
