Dog walking products

A lead and a collar are necessary accessories for all dogs. It’s much easier to restrain your dog by holding their collar, rather than by grabbing the scruff of their neck. Also, you can attach their identity tag and registration tag to the ring on the collar, and they will help identify your dog should he ever get lost.

What Size Collar for Your Dog?

It’s important to choose the right size of collar for your dog. If it is too loose, it will slip right over their head. Too tight and it will restrict their breathing and be very uncomfortable.  Most collars can be adjusted, but you do need to measure your dog’s neck before you make your purchase.

The easiest way to do this is to use a soft measuring tape, the type you would use for dressmaking. Wrap it around your dog’s neck, and tighten it until it is snug but not tight against their skin. Gradually loosen it until you can fit two fingers between the measuring tape and your dog’s neck, and this will be a good indicator of what sized collar to buy.

If your dog is just a puppy, keep in mind that you will need to replace their collar as they grow bigger, so check regularly to make sure it isn’t getting too tight.

Dog leads also come in a variety of lengths, with 4 feet and 6 feet leads being suitable for most dogs.  A longer lead is a better choice for a small dog, because it can be a long way from your hand to their neck!

Styles and Colours

There is a style and colour of collar and lead to suit any dog and their lifestyle.

If your dog loves the outdoors, and prefers to spend their day hiking instead of reclining on the couch, you’ll need a sturdy lead and collar that isn’t easily damaged.  There’s no reason why they still can’t look smart, so consider the Dogue range of leather collars and leads for your dog. Whether you prefer a solid colour, or a stylish plaid, there will be one that looks great with your dog’s coat colour.  Leather is durable and will easily withstand a bit of rough and tumble.

Perhaps your dog likes to make a fashion statement and would prefer to wear a little bling.  If so, look for a collar such as the Dogue Swarovski Crystal collar. Soft cow hide leather encrusted with Swarovski crystals will delight any dog who appreciates designer wear.

Some dogs just don’t walk well on a collar, and will pull until they gag. However, most local dog laws insist that dogs are walked on a lead. If your dog behaves like this when they are walked on a collar, is it possible for them to still get out for a stroll? Definitely. Your dog can wear a harness such as the Kramar Safe T Harness. Although they were initially designed to keep your dog safe while travelling in a car, these harnesses have a ring on the back where you can attach a lead. You can then take your dog on an outing without worrying about hurting his neck.
