Norwegian Elkhound
Previous  Up  Next"

The Norwegian Elkhound is a very old breed indeed. It originated in Scandinavia over 6000 years ago to help hunters track large game such as moose or bear. This part of the world is very cold, but Norwegian Elkhounds were well protected from the icy conditions by their thick double coat. The outer layer resisted rain and snow, while the soft undercoat kept them warm. This breed, whose ancestry harks back to the time of the Vikings, is now the national dog of Norway.

Modern Norwegian Elkhounds retain their hunting instinct and may cause problems if your household includes other smaller pets such as cats or rodents. They view these little creatures as prey, and will constantly try to get to them. This can be quite disruptive for your household, so do take this into consideration before you bring a Norwegian Elkhound home.

Although hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy are occasionally a problem in these dogs, they are for the most part a healthy breed. They are quite long lived, with their average lifespan being up to 16 years.

Appearance

Norwegian Elkhounds are a sturdy, medium sized dog who can grow as tall as 50cm, and weigh up to 25kg. They have an alert, interested facial expression, with an attractive wedge shaped face, erect ears and a tail that is tightly rolled over their back.

Their dense undercoat is silver-grey, and is covered by a coarse black-tipped outer coat. They shed their coat twice a year. If your dog lives indoors, you'll be sweeping up drifts of dog hair every day during their moult! Their coat needs regular brushing but this is even more essential when they are shedding.

Temperament

As with other breeds who have been developed to work closely with humans, Norwegian Elkhounds are very loyal and form a close bond with their owners. They are very intelligent, and because of their friendly nature and even temperament, they make a wonderful family pet. Having said that, they are boisterous and do need plenty of exercise to keep them happy. If they don't get the opportunity to use up their energy and keep their mind active, they will amuse themselves. This usually doesn't have a good outcome for you!

The Norwegian Elkhound is a good watchdog and their piercing bark will warn you if there are intruders around.

Working and Tasks

Norwegian Elkhounds can be stubborn and independent, and may be difficult to train. They need an owner that will be firm and consistent from puppyhood.  These dogs might not excel in obedience classes, but it is important that you do take the time to train them, so they learn their place in your family pack.

They have lots of energy, and need at least a good walk every day.

Great companions for children, these dogs love to share outdoor adventures with their family. If you can manage their independent nature and need for exercise, and the amount of hair they lose at moulting time, the Norwegian Elkhound is a great all round family dog.
