Papillon
Previous  Up  Next"

The Papillon is a charming little dog, with a long white coat, dark eyes and expressive ears. Their name is French for "butterfly” - those large dark ears look like butterfly wings, and the white stripe down their face represents the butterfly's body.

Nobody really knows how the Papillon was developed. It is known to have been a very popular breed in Europe in the 16th century. These little dogs were kept as companions for aristocrats and royalty. Legend has it that Marie Antoinette owned a Papillon, and carried her little dog as she walked to her execution.

These little dogs have very few health problems, but like many other toy breeds, they may suffer from loose kneecaps. This can cause lameness and at its worst, may need surgery to resolve the problem. You can expect your Papillon to live for around 14 years.

Appearance

Papillons are a very slender, dainty breed, and don't grow any taller than around 30cm at the shoulder! They are also very light - maximum weight as an adult is only 3kg. Because of their size, they must be watched when playing with young children, to make sure they aren't loved too much and get injured.

The ears are the breed's most distinctive feature. Large and triangular with a long fringe, they give these little dogs an alert, intelligent expression. These dogs have a long flowing white coat, with areas of black or tan on their ears and face. They have a frill on their chest and their feathered tail arches is carried elegantly over their back.

Even though their coat is long and silky, it's not hard to take care of. Outdoor dogs that pick up plant material in their coat will need a bit more attention, but most Papillons only need a good brush once every week.

Temperament

Many people think toy dogs are not very smart, and are just lap dogs to keep people company. This certainly isn't the case with the Papillon. This breed is very even tempered; they are happy to share a game, or to cuddle up on the couch with you. They are very clever and easy to train, and do well in obedience classes.

These little dogs are not at all snappy or aggressive, but can be very protective of their master. They will defend themselves if they are threatened, so take care when young children are around. Youngsters can be rough, and a Papillon will certainly let them know when they're playing too hard. Because they can be shy when they meet new people, Papillons are good watchdogs and will let you know when a stranger is around.

Working and Tasks

Although small, Papillons are a great family pet. They don't need much exercise so they are a good choice of breed for apartment dwellers, or those with small back yards. They are also an ideal companion for elderly people, because they are gentle, loyal and affectionate, and easy to care for.

Whether you are just looking for some canine company, or for a dog to train for obedience and agility competitions, consider a Papillon as your next four legged friend. A whole lot of friendship hides inside that small frame.
