The Alpine Dachsbracke is a breed which was developed in Austria for the specific task of scent tracking. These scent hounds have been used to track wounded deer, bore, hare and fox.

Once the favourite of royalty, the Alpine Dachsbracke was developed in the nineteenth century by cross breeding Dachsunds with smaller dogs. The intent was to develop a breed that would have the skills of a scent hound but also be smaller and more resilient, therefore better able to assist a hunt in rough terrain where access became difficult. Currently the only major kennel club who recognise the Alpine Dachsbracke is based in the US. There are several hunting clubs who also categorise the breed.

Appearance

With their muscular build and strong body, the Alpine Dachsbracke is a resilient dog. The Alpine Dachsbracke has short legs and a long body. Its’ coat is short and smooth to the touch, colour variations include black, tan, brown and red. It has a broad chest, and a tail which is set high to the body. A small sized dog, the Alpine Dachsbracke grows to around 13 to 16 inches and weighs about 15-18 kilograms when it is an adult.

Temperament

The Alpine Dachsbracke is known for its wilful personality as well as its durability in many hostile environments. As its name suggests, the Alpine Dachsbracke is able to work at high altitudes and on rough terrain while on the hunt. Never put off by a difficult journey or bad weather, the Alpine Dachsbracke is a very durable dog.

As they are used to working alone, some dogs can develop alpha syndrome, and will need strong discipline from their master to avoid any serious behavioural issues.

The Alpine Dachsbracke also makes a fine family pet. They are intelligent and lively as well as loyal. They get on well with children and will make an excellent family member.

While they are an active dog with strong endurance, they are also suitable for a home with a small yard or even an apartment. They will need to have lots of long walks though, and especially enjoy getting out into the wilderness where they are at their best.

Even when living in a family environment, the Alpine Dachsbracke will maintain their strong hunting instinct. For this reason it is a good idea to keep a close eye on them around smaller pets such as cats, birds or rabbits, as unless they grow up with these creatures from a young age they will recognise them as prey.

Working and Tasks

The best of the Alpine Dachsbracke is in its ability as a scent hound and tracker dog. They are able to follow a trail almost anywhere, even once it has gone cold. Even if you have no intention of ever hunting with your Alpine Dachsbracke, taking them out on a nature walk will be thoroughly enjoyed by your dog. Lots of exercise is a must.

Health

With proper care and vet check ups, an Alpine Dachsbracke will live to about 12 years of age. Their short coat is easy to look after and requires little grooming. Be sure to pay particular attention to the ears, as they can be prone in infection.
