American Bulldog
Previous  Up  Next"

The American Bulldog is a sturdy and strong dog. There are three types of American Bulldog; the Johnson type, the Scott type and the Old Southern White. Johnsons are a heavier larger dog, while Scotts are longer in the legs.

They are thought to be the closest surviving relative of the Old English bulldog. While bulldogs in Europe where cross bred, the breed in America was isolated and was left untouched in its confirmation. While slightly larger the Old English Bulldog, the American Bulldog has very similar features and temperament to the original dogs it descended from.

When the bulldog first arrived in America, they were utilised commonly as farm dogs in the South. They were used as guard dogs, looking after crops and farm animals and in some cases even as herders. At the end of World War Two, the breed had almost become extinct. At this time, several breeders in the south pooled together to save them from extinction. These days there numbers are quite high again, and the American Bulldog is both a popular family pet and farm dog.

Appearance

The American bulldog is a very well built dog, known for its strength. They have very powerful jaws. The coats is short and smooth, the dogs are light shedders. There is much difference in the shades of the coat, they can be a solid colour or any pattern of different colours including black, white, fawn, brown, red and brindle. Pigmentation around the nose, eyes and mouth can be black or pink, the breed standard only allows a certain amount of pink to be showing. Most dogs will have brown eyes, but they are shades of blue seen in some dogs.

There is quite a difference in size across the breed, with height varying between 20 and 28 inches. An adult dog will weigh between 27 and 57 kilograms.

Temperament

The American Bulldog is well suited to family life, but it is important that they are socialised form a young age. Those that are exposed to children and other dogs from the time they are a puppy will do much better when they are older.

A large backyard is best, also a moderate level of exercise is required. Walking your dog three times a week is recommended, but they will certainly enjoy daily walks as well.

Working and Tasks

Bulldogs were originally bred in Europe for the sport of bull baiting, which was outlawed in the 18th century. After this they were commonly kept as butchers dogs, guard dogs and as family pets. Today many people keep American Bulldogs as pets, but they also make a great guard dog to this day. Their loyalty and strength render them apt at this task.

Health

American Bulldogs live to between 10 and 15 years off age. For the most part they are strong and healthy dogs. They have been known to suffer from hip dysplasia, as well as an enlarged heart. Some bulldogs have suffered problems with their stomach and liver as well as bone cancer.
