The American Hairless Terrier is a rare breed of dog which is a variant of the rat terrier. It has only been in recent years that is has been recognized as a separate breed of its own. The breed came about in Louisiana in 1972, when a litter of Rat Terriers was born, one of whom was hairless. The bitch was very striking looking and grew up to have a lovely temperament. Attempts to breed more dogs from this original bitch were successful when a litter was born in 1981.

It is common for a dog in a litter of American Hairless Terriers to be born with a coat. In this instance they are still considered to fall into the breed category of hairless terriers. It is recognized by the founders of the breed that this is bound to occur, and that the Hairless Terriers will need to be cross bred with Rat Terriers in order to keep a healthy gene pool available in the future.

Many people who suffer from asthma or other allergies find this breed of dog is perfect for them. As the dog does not shed hair about the house, many people who would normally react to the presence of a dog find that they don not. It has been said that the American Hairless Terrier is a good choice if you are looking for a dog with no maintenance, however the breed needs as much grooming and care than any other.

Appearance

This small dog is often mistaken for a Chihuahua, it was a small triangle shaped head, pointed ears and large eyes. The dog is entirely hairless. The pigment of the skin varies somewhat, it can be pink, white or black, it can also be solid or patterned. There are also some dogs who are born with coats in varying colours. They range in size form 10 to 18 inches in height. The dog has quite a muscular appearance, and has strong legs. Its large ears will often stand alert, and appear slightly too large for the head.

The Hairless Terrier is an energetic dog who loves to play with its master and with other dogs. They are very alert and intelligent and respond well to training. Their ancestors were bred for hunting, and to this day the modern dogs still retain this instinct. Hairless Terriers get along well with other dogs as well as children and are friendly towards all who they meet.
