American Mastiff

American Mastiff
Previous  Up  Next"

The American Mastiff was created by breeding the English Mastiff with the Antolian Mastiff dog. The intention was to breed a very large dog with little health problems, a long life span and a high level of intelligence.

At the time of the creation of the breed many Mastiffs suffered from the health problems that a lot of purebred dogs do. Hip dysplasia was very common, many dogs also drooled a large amount. By combining the characteristics of two Mastiff breeds, a larger gene pool was created and many of the health problems were eliminated. The current lifespan of an American Mastiff is quite long for such a large dog.

A relatively new breed, the American Mastiff is not yet recognised by all kennel clubs. There are thought to be approximately ten breeders across America and Canada. The characteristics of the breed have been chose with the idea of creating a family dog rather than a show dog.

Appearance

The American Mastiff is a very large breed of dog, with an adult standing at around 28 to 36 inches in height. They weigh in between 70 and 85 kilograms. They have a large head with a short muzzle and will show wrinkles around the neck and other parts of the body. They have a strong and broad chest and long and powerful legs. There are three variations of coat colour; brindle, fawn and apricot.

Temperament

Ideal for a family, these dogs truly are gentle giants. They are very loving and quite content within a family environment. They are quite idle by nature, but taking them on a regular walk is beneficial for their health. They enjoy the company of children and are trustworthy enough to be left alone with young ones, or even other pets.

Usually a quiet and complacent dog, an American Mastiff will only become aggressive if their territory is breached or their family threatened. As they are generally lazy dogs they can be kept in a small yard, but daily walks are recommended.

An American Mastiff is a very popular choice for a family dog. Their lovely temperament is perfect for their task as companion, while their large size and strength makes them an ideal guard dog. They suffer few health problems and are very easy to groom and maintain.

Working and Tasks

Mastiff breeds descended from the Alaunt and were originally developed in Roman times to be guard dogs. Their task was to protect women and children while the men were at work. These days Mastiffs are still used as guard dogs, although the primary occupation of the American Mastiff is as beloved family pet and companion.

Health

The development of the American Mastiff and the focus on eliminating many of the health problems suffered by purebred dogs has been largely successful. American Mastiffs live a long life span for a large purebred; usually around 11 years. They do not suffer from the hip and eye problems of many pure breed dogs.

The short and smooth coat of the American Mastiff needs little grooming. They shed and average amount of hair.
