American Water Spaniels are energetic and lively dogs who are apt at hunting small prey. As their name suggests they never hesitate to get in the water in chase of ducks or even fish. The origin of the American Water Spaniel remains a mystery, despite many theories on the subject. They are believed to have been developed in Wisconsin, by cross breeding the English Water Spaniel, which is now extinct, with the Field Spaniel. Others believe the breed is the decedent of the Irish Water Spaniel and the Curly Coated Retriever.
The breed became popular in marshy areas where a hunting dog was needed that would not hesitate to work in the water or on wet ground. It was also needed to be compact so that it could ride in a small boat with its master. The American Kennel Club recognised the American Water Spaniel as a breed in 1940. The breed was at the height of its popularity in the 1920s and 1930s although there are still strong numbers around today.
Appearance
Water spaniels are easily recognised by their distinctive coat, silky to the touch, it sits in gentle waves having a slight curl. The coat is quite dense and protects the dog from cold weather and rain. There are three colour variations; liver, brown and chocolate. Some dogs will have points of white around the coat. Like many spaniels, it also has large round eyes which are commonly brown in colour, but can also be hazel or even yellow. Eye colour should be in key with the colour of the coat. Standing at between 15 and 18 inches in height and weighing between 11 and 20 kilos they are classified as a medium sized dog.
Temperament
The American Water Spaniel is very much a pack animal, it will develop a strong relationship with the alpha of the household. Children are viewed as siblings until they grow older. While quite well natured in their youth, some dogs can become tempestuous in their old age. They are happy living in a family environment, and will suit those living in a home with a small yard, as long as regular walks are taken.
While they do not need to hunt, Water spaniels will be much happier if they are getting regular exercise. Obedience training is also recommended. They are gentle dogs by nature, and will not respond well to hard training methods, in fact this may cause them to become introverted or even aggressive.
Working and Tasks
Still retaining their hunting spirit, Water spaniels will do well with small sized prey be it birds or small land animals. They have even been known to catch fish on occasions. They are quite courageous hunters, and show little hesitation when following a trail.
Health
There are no major health problems that face the breed as a whole, however there are instances of heart problems, hip dysplasia and cancer. Special attention should be paid to the dog’s ears and eyes as sometimes infections or other problems can occur. When looking for a breeder, check for papers on hip scores, eye tests and family history of heart disease in the puppy’s family.
