Akita | Akita Inu

Akita | Akita Inu

The Akita Inu is a breed of dog which originated in Japan. The word Akita corresponds to the region of Japan where the breed is thought to have been developed, and Inu translates literally as dog. The American and Australia Akita differs slightly in appearance to the Japanese Akita Inu, in some places these are recognised as separate breeds.

The dog is thought to have developed on the islands of Japan, where it would hunt for pray such as elk and bear. It was a fast and agile dog and still is today. Scientific tests have shown the Akita to be one of the oldest dog breeds in the world.

During World War II Akitas were hunted down for their fur to make army uniforms. At the conclusion of the war, there numbers were much diminished. A small group of people dedicated themselves to restoring the numbers of the Akita. For the first time they were bred for a standardised appearance. Many US servicemen who were in Japan after the war took a liking to the breed and brought them back to America with them.

Appearance

An Akita grows to around 22 – 24 inches and is considered a medium sized dogs. An adult dog weighs in at around 30 – 45kg.  There are five variations in colour; red, fawn, sesame, brindle and white. The breed standard requires that all colours must feature a white bristle on the neck, cheeks, chest and tail. American Akitas often have black pointing to parts of the body, but this is not allowed as part of the Akita Inu standard.

Temperament

Akitas are an intelligent and loyal dog. It’s important to keep them occupied and make sure they get a lot of exercise, otherwise they have been known to become destructive. When they are happy, Akitas are known to make a strange grunting sound.

Socialisation is important for the Akita. Making sure your puppy gets used to all sorts of other dogs, pets and people is important. The unsocialised Akita can become aggressive towards other dogs and people. Akitas are independent dogs by nature and will do better when the only pet in the household, unless they have grown up around other pets.

Working and Tasks

Akitas have been put to work at many tasks over the years. They have been trained as guard dogs and also as working and herding dogs. In Japan they were often used to guard children while parents were at work. Their intelligence means they will take well to many different purposes. Akitas have also been used as police dogs because of their strength and agility.

Health

An Akita will live on average to around 11 years of age. They have a double coat which renders them waterproof. The inner layer is straight and the outer layer thick and fluffy. Akitas do require a moderate amount of grooming. In warmer weather Akitas will shed their coat. Like many purebreds Akitas are known to have hip and eye problems. Some dogs have also suffered with heart conditions.
