Boxer
Previous  Up  Next"

The Boxer is a medium sized dog, it has a strong and muscular build and a very playful demeanor. While originally bred as a fighting dog, modern Boxers are a favourite choice as a family pet, the aggressive streak has long left the bloodline.

The name Boxer comes from the appearance of the dog when it fights. It will stand on its hind legs and strike out with the front legs. To onlookers, it rather looks as if the dog is trying to box.

The German Bullenbeisser, a now extinct Mastiff breed and the English Bulldog were cross bred to develop the boxer. The Bullenbeisser was a strong dog which was used to hunt large game, while the Bulldog was a quick dog who was also a strong fighter.

Boxers are one of the most popular breeds of dogs in the world, with many people choosing them to own as a family pet.

Appearance

The Boxer is medium in size and stocky in build. It has a square shaped head with a pronounced jaw and a strong bite. The tail is short. While traditionally ears have been cropped, more and more breeders are allowing the ears to grown to full length. An adult stands at between 21 and 25 inches in height, the male taller than the female. They weigh in at between 30 and 35 kilograms.

The breed standard dictates that the coat should be fawn with brindle, however there are many white boxers in existence. In the early days of the breed only white dogs were bred, but this is now seen as a fault. White markings are allowed to parts of the body, and there are often black points about the face.

The movement of a Boxer is quite graceful, considering the stocky figure of the dog. Despite their appearance they are quite agile.

Temperament

Boxers do well with children and other pets. They are very friendly dogs and for the most part are very well mannered. They are confident dogs who don’t often hesitate, and for this reason some dogs have a stubborn streak. Boxers should take part in regular training so this can be kept under control.

Boxers love to play, whether they are puppies or well into their old age they will always be keen to spend time with their masters. They are quite excitable and love walks and games.

Working and Tasks

The Boxer was utilized as a military dog by the US army in both World Wars I and II. Many soldiers grew fond of the breed, and took them home as pets in peace time. Their popularity quickly spread. The Boxer became popular as a show dog in the late 1940s and remains so to this day.

Health

There are many health conditions known to occur across the breed. The most common are hip dysplasia, heart problems and digestive problems. When looking for a puppy be aware of its genetic history and always take you dog to the vet on a regular basis
