The American Cocker Spaniel are companion dogs whose popularity has surged around the world. The breed originally derives from England, where Cocker Spaniels were developed as a gun dog and used in hunting. The American breed is somewhat different to the English variant, but when the term ‘Cocker Spaniel’ is used around the world, people are usually referring to the American variant rather than the English original. The name Cocker comes from the Woodcock that the dogs were originally trained to hunt.
There are a few Cocker Spaniels today who are used for hunting, but the breed on the whole is mostly kept as a companion dog.
Appearance
Cocker Spaniels are renowned for their long coat which is silky to the touch. Feathering of the coat occurs around the belly and legs. They are large round eyes, which are brown. The head is round in shape, and the ears are long and hang down either side of the head. The tail is often docked for show dogs, although this practice is now illegal in many places. Most cocker spaniels are between 14 and 16 inches high and weigh between 11 and 13 kilograms when they are full grown adults.
Temperament
American Cocker Spaniels are outgoing dogs, they have a happy demeanor. Tests have shown them to also be a very intelligent dogs, they will do well in obedience training. They can also be quite sensitive, and will respond well to discipline. Training which is too harsh may not be effective, a gentler hand is recommended. It is important that you do undergo some type of obedience training with your cocker spaniel, those who do not can grow up to have behavioral problems.
Well suited to a family environment, a cocker spaniel will get on well with children as well as any other pets. Their smaller size means that they are suitable for life in a smaller home, although it is recommended that they do have a yard and a moderate amount of exercise.
Working and Tasks
Many Cocker Spaniels retain their hunter instincts even though they have been kept as a companion dog all their life. Many owners will note their Cocker Spaniel barking at birds or even airplanes as they fly overhead. Be very careful with pet birds or having a bird bath in your yard, as the instinct will be too strong for the dog and they will be inclined to hurt them. American Cocker Spaniels will respond well to most types of training, due to their intelligence and their willingness to please their master.
Health
American Cocker Spaniels will live on average to around 11 years of age. Many dogs suffer from eye and ear conditions, so it is important to always monitor your dog’s health. Keeping the coat well maintained is a must, as well as regular baths to avoid problems with the ears. Some dogs have also suffered from hip dysplasia, so if buying a puppy it is important to make sure the parents have been hip scored.
