Redbone Coonhound
Previous  Up  Next"

Redbone Coonhounds are very elegant and attractive looking dogs. They are excellent hunters yet make wonderful pets too. Excellent with children and easy to train, they will protect the family and show undivided attention and devotion. Their desire to hunt is strong so it is vital they are kept on a leash at all times in public, and kept well fenced in at home. They are happy living in an apartment without outdoor space to run around in, however they do need one long, good walk every day.

Appearance

This particular breed is very handsome looking. It has a muzzle of medium length and very long hanging ears which reach the end of its nose if pulled forward. Its paws are more cat-like than dog-like and it has large strong pads. Their tails are of medium length and curve slightly upwards. They have short, shiny coats and their colour is more often than not, red, but sometimes with a little white included too on their feet and chests. Normally they are of completely solid colour however. The height of these dogs range from between 21-27 inches (53-66 cm), and their weight ranges from 50-70 pounds (23-32 kg).

Temperament

Despite having a desire to hunt, they do make very good pets. They are hugely affectionate with their family and very good with children. They can sometimes chase and hunt down cats and other small animals however which is something to be award of if you are bringing one into your home. If they have been introduced to cats and kittens from a young age however then this becomes less likely to happen. They can drool quite heavily which can be off putting for some owners, but their obedience and willingness to learn and please their master makes them good family companions. They absolutely love being around people. They need a long walk everyday at the very least to keep them mentally and physically strong, but their desire to chase smaller animals means they should be kept on a leash at all times.

Working and Tasks

Redbone Coonhounds are good hunting dogs, with an in built desire to follow a scent. They can work in all terrain and do not tire easily. Their agility even ensures they can work in difficult terrain, for example that which is rocky or steep. They are excellent at hunting raccoons but also good at hunting bear, cougars and bobcats. They like to hunt in packs and this is how they work best. They also make excellent water dogs. Firm and consistent training is key to handling Redbone Coonhounds but they pick up instructions and commands with ease
