Rhodesian Ridgeback

Rhodesian Ridgebacks are so named because they are originally from Zimbabwe and they have a very clearly defined ridge of hairs down their backs that run in the opposite direction to the rest of the coat. They make excellent pets if they receive the correct level of mental and physical stimulation that they need, however problems can occur if they do not receive the high levels that they need. They are extremely intelligent and respond very well to training, although it is important they understand exactly who is the pack leader.

Appearance

Rhodesian Ridgebacks are large dogs that have broad heads. They have round, dark eyes and usually a dark nose on the end of a long, deep muzzle. Ears are of medium size, placed quite high on the head and tapering to a point but quite wide at the base. They have long tails that slight curve upwards. They have short hair that is easily groomed, and it is possible to see a clear ridge of hairs growing in the opposite direction to the rest of the coat down the centre of their backs. The colours of these dogs range from white to reddish brown. Often a little white fur will be present on the chest and the toes.

Temperament

This particular breed needs a lot of mental and physical exercise, and as so, is not recommended for everyone. If they do not get the required amount of stimulation they can become difficult to manage, and even destructive. They do make excellent pets however if handled correctly and are very calm and gentle dogs. Although they are good with children, they can sometimes play a little roughly with them and knock small children over which is something to bear in mind. They are extremely loyal and protective of their family and if trained well from a young age will mix well with cats and other small animals. They have a large amount of stamina - be assured you would tire long before they would! They are very vigilant and brave which makes them excellent watch dogs.

Working and Tasks

Rhodesian Ridgebacks are extremely brave and vigilant and make good watch dogs, although not guard dogs. They need consistent and calm training from a young age to ensure they socialise well with strangers, children and other dogs. It is important they know who is pack leader, and will be disobedient if they feel they are further up the pecking order than their owners. They are particularly good hunters, ferocious and with plenty of stamina. Being of high intelligence, they are able to learn and carry out orders well and it is not overly difficult to train them.
