Samoyeds are quite unusual looking as they have a very large amount of hair. They need a lot of grooming to keep it clean and un-matted, but do make excellent pets. Loving and devoted, not to mention gentle and obedient, they fit into family life very well. They were originally found only in Siberia and were used as guard dogs, herders and even hot water bottles during the cold snowy nights to the local hunters and fishermen. They need a daily walk or jog to stay mentally and physically fit, but otherwise are happy in an apartment with no outdoor space. They are heavy shedders though so arm chairs and sofas will need attention in your house if one of these is present!
Appearance
The Samoyed has a very compact and muscular body with a broad, wedge shaped head that tapers to a muzzle that is in proportion and a black, brown or liver coloured nose. They have dark, almond shaped eyes that are set far apart and have slanting lower lids and dark rims around them. They have triangular shaped ears that are usually erect and are slightly rounded at the tips. They have quite long tails although they are rolled onto their backs. Legs are very muscular and their feet are covered with hair. They have very thick outer coats that is harsh and stands out on end, and then underneath they have a softer, shorter coat. Colours of these dogs can be pure white, yellow or cream, but the colour most desired by owners, particularly for the show ring is solid white.
Temperament
Samoyeds are very gentle dogs, totally devoted to their owners. They are playful and easy-going, loving everyone from children to strangers alike. They don’t make good watch dogs as they would greet a trespasser with a wagging tail and playful demeanor. They enjoy the challenge of training and respond well to a gentle approach. Being highly intelligent, they pick up obedience training quickly and easily. They are known for being chewers, however with enough exercise and training, this can be avoided. Ideally they need socialising with other animals from a young age, as they can be known to chase, however many live well with cats in families. Good natured, lively and sociable, they make fantastic family pets.
Working and Tasks
Samoyeds are ancient working dogs from Siberia. They lived with hunters and fisherman who were known as Samoyeds, which is how the breed got its name. They would pull sleds, guard property and be used for herding reindeer. At night time, the dogs would sleep with the humans to help keep them warm. Robert Scott, a British explorer brought the dogs over to England in 1889
