Cambodian Razorback

Cambodian Razorbacks are primitive dogs that originated in Cambodia. They are quite an unusual breed, both how they look and because of the fact they have long hair, despite being bred in tropical climates. They were first discovered in the Mekong River Valley in Cambodia and like the Rhodesian Ridgeback, descend from pariah stock that is common to Southern Asian and Africa. They are quite rare dogs, known for their agility and protectiveness. They need a strong pack leader, otherwise they will be very difficult to handle and disobediant, perhaps even aggressive. Because of this, they are not suitable for novice dog owners looking for a family pet.

Appearance

This rare breed of dog has long hair, and although they are only medium sized, they are certainly powerful, muscular and strong for their size. They are also very agile and active. They have short, broad heads with very pronounced cheek muscles. They have pricked, alert ears at all times and lovely eyes. Some of the breed have piercing blue eyes. They have quite long coats which is quite unusual for tropical dogs, however they do not overheat like other long haired dogs would in a hot climate. They have bushy tails and a ridge that runs along their back. The ridge is very noticeable and stands at over 2 inches high. Common colours are white and black, brown and fawn or a combination. Their height at shoulder is up to 20 inches (50 cm) for males and weight is up to 60 pounds (27kg). Females are smaller both in height and weight.

Temperament

These are very friendly dogs with their family, however can be very wary of strangers. They don’t tend to bark a lot, only when they deem it necessary. Because of their built in protectiveness trait, they make excellent guard dogs. They are territorial and don’t take kindly to other dogs and animals, unless they have been socialised from an early age. They are not ideal for novice owners as they need firm and consistent handling to avoid any behavioral problems or problems with aggression. They are very confident dogs but will be friendly and loving towards their owners.

Working and Tasks

Cambodian Razorbacks make excellent guard dogs and watch dogs. They are protective of their family and their surroundings, and will bark loudly if they think either is in danger. They also work well on hunts, being agile and energetic they don’t tire easily.
