Small Dog Breeds

Times are tough for many families, and they have had to tighten their belts in all areas of their lives.  However, by choosing a small breed and budgeting carefully, they can still enjoy the companionship of a dog.  Even though small dogs are less expensive to look after, they still cost money. A potential owner still must do their research to make sure they can in fact afford a dog, and then work out which breed of dog is right for them.

There are many advantages to owning a small breed of dog.

1. These little animals don’t eat a lot, so your food bill will be small. Their droppings are also not very large. This makes the job of picking up poo in your yard or while you are out walking a whole lot more pleasant!

2.  Flea control products and worming medications are often dosed according to body weight. This means that it is usually cheaper to buy these products if your dog is little. Veterinary care may also cost less. Small dogs need a smaller amount of prescription medication, and routine surgery such as neutering often is less expensive.

3. Small dogs often don’t need as much exercise as a larger breed. They are also easier to keep if you live in an apartment. However, there are some smaller dogs that really enjoy a good long walk and are great company for an active person.

4. You will be able to find a small dog breed with a coat type that suits your lifestyle. If you don’t have the time or the money to have your dog regularly clipped and groomed, choose a breed with a short coat that just needs a quick brush with a Zoom Groom. Perhaps you enjoy spending some quiet time brushing and combing your dog’s hair. If so, there are several little breeds with lovely long flowing tresses.

5. Even though they are small in stature, small dogs have big personalities. They usually have a longer lifespan than larger dogs, and will become an important part of your life for up to 15 years.
There are some characteristics of small dogs that you do need to be aware of, but you can take steps to prevent them from becoming a problem.
Firstly, although they are small, these dogs still need to be trained, and to learn their place in the household. Many small dogs are allowed to get away with being naughty just because they are so cute.  This is affectionately known as “small dog syndrome”.  Small dogs are as intelligent as any other size of dog, and any bad behaviour should not be permitted.
Secondly, small dogs generally have an increased incidence of dental disease. Again, because they are cute and tiny, many owners feed them soft food and treats, rather than insist that they eat hard biscuits that may help prevent tartar accumulation. The size of their mouth may also make it more difficult to brush their teeth.
Doggiemart features descriptions of the most popular small dog breeds, and also listings of responsible breeders, so you can find the perfect small dog for you.
