Large Dog Breeds
If you have a bit more space in your yard, and your budget allows it, you may enjoy owning a large breed of dog. These dogs are great companions and whether you are an active person or a couch potato, you’ll find a large breed to suit your lifestyle.
Here you will find Large dog breeds weighing between 15kg and 30kg or 30lbs to 65lbs
Before you decide to buy a large breed of dog, you must do your homework just as you would if you wanted a dog of any size. Think about your budget, how much free time you have for exercising and walking your dog, and whether or not you want a long or short haired dog. By doing this, you’ll have a better chance of choosing the right large sized dog breed for you.
1. It’s not necessary to have a big house or a huge yard for a large dog, as long as you are prepared to take them a good long walk every day. As with any other size of dog, there are variations in the exercise requirements of different breeds. If you are an active person, choose an athletic breed such as the Australian Shepherd. You’ll have great company on your daily run. You will have to make allowances for your dog when they come inside your home, as they will take up more space, and may bump into things. At the very least, they will take up more space on the couch!
2. As your dog’s size increases, so do your expenses. Large dogs have larger appetites, so be prepared to spend a little more money on food. What goes in must come out, so you’ll find that you have a larger volume of droppings to clean up. Medications for preventing worms and treating fleas are dosed according to your dog’s weight, so a large dog will need a higher dose.
3. It’s important to groom your dog regularly to keep their skin and fur in good condition, particularly if they have a long coat like that of the Bearded Collie. If you are not prepared to spend the time and money to care for a long coat, there are several large breeds with short coats that are easy to maintain. You may want to consider the American Foxhound or the Greyhound, both of which only need a once-over with a Zoom Groom to keep their coats in good condition.
4. Large dogs definitely need training because they can be quite strong. If you teach them to walk nicely with you, you can take them for a walk rather than the other way around.
5. Do you have children in your home? With the large breeds, you do have to take keep an eye on them around small people. Even the gentlest dog will hurt a child if they play too roughly with them. Another issue with large dogs is that they may be bigger than your child, and they may see themselves as dominant to them. This can lead to an increased risk of dog bites purely because your large dog tries to put your child in their place.
Large dog breeds are wonderful companions if you can afford the time and money to care for them, and you choose the right breed for your way of life.
