Extra-Extra Large Dog Breeds

The decision to own an extra-extra-large dog shouldn’t be taken lightly. These breeds should only be considered by those who can care for them appropriately.  XXL sized dog breeds weighing over 35kg or 85lbs.
Let’s look at some factors to keep in mind if you are thinking about buying one of the extra-extra-large breeds of dogs.
1. Even as puppies, these dogs are big. They grow fast and they eat a lot. Dogs of this size are not for people on a tight budget.  If you are on a limited income or you have a lot of other expenses, you may be better suited to a smaller breed that is not so expensive to care for.

2. Extra-extra-large dogs may be at increased risk of orthopaedic problems associated with rapid growth and a heavy body weight.  One such condition is osteochondrosis dissecans, a defect in the cartilage of the joints in the limbs. There is a genetic component to this disease, but the risk increases if a dog grows very quickly when they are young.  You must choose your pup carefully to reduce the genetic risk, and watch what and how much you feed your growing pup. Look on Doggiemart to find breeders of extra-extra-large dog breeds who meet our stringent standards.

3. These big dogs are intimidating! Even though they may be gentle, they can be quite scary when they rush up to your front gate. This is an advantage if you are looking for a dog to deter intruders, but it’s not so good if they scare your children’s friends away.  Always supervise your dog when visitors arrive so they don’t get jumped on or knocked over by an over- enthusiastic dog.

4. Because they take up so much space, these dogs aren’t the best choice for people who live in apartments.  They will bump into people and furniture, and knock things off coffee tables. Ideally, owners of an extra-extra-large dog will have a reasonably sized house and back yard so they have space to move.

5. Extra-extra-large dog breeds need training right from the start; otherwise it will be difficult to take them anywhere. You’ll soon tire of being dragged down the street, and you won’t be popular with people you meet if your giant dog rushes up to say hello. Training is also important to keep your dog’s mind active. A bored dog can do some damage to your backyard and furniture, but when that dog is a giant breed, the holes they dig are huge!

6. Take into consideration your activity level and your enthusiasm for dog grooming before you choose your new canine companion. The Rhodesian Ridgeback enjoys going for a run or a long walk, and will be unhappy if they live with a sedentary family. On the other hand, the Bernese Mountain Dog is a better choice if you’re not particularly keen on exercise.

The extra-extra-large dogs are not suitable for every family. However, if you have the space, the time and the income to properly look after them, you’ll have a great time with your giant pet.
